One of my teachers recently told me that I am not using all of my power. What!? That I am wasting my potential. How?! No one likes to hear these things. Especially without any follow up about how to correct it. But advice is not what we should expect from our teachers. The best teachers only make you aware of opportunities to learn more about yourself. And that is why, Dear Sisters, I want to share with you three steps to identify and harness your power.
I began my reflection by asking, where does my power reside? How do I know what to do with it? Very clearly, the wisdom came that my power resides in my heart. Where else could it be; it is not my mind, it is not my body. My power is in my heart. Next, I had to ask, how do I show up for my self? Obviously by being present and listening to myself, duh. Then giving my self appropriate time to know myself. And finally, nourishing my self. And here’s where I got stuck. What if there is no self, and time doesn’t exist? What am I if not my ‘self’-I am a soul. What do I have if I don’t have any time-I have space. So the steps are: listen to your soul’s truth, give your soul space to expand, and nourish your soul with love. Let me break it down for you, kind soul. Step one is always to go within. Only in quiet stillness with our body and mind can we hear the gentle musings of our soul. It requires no coaxing, no permissions, no invitations; only your complete surrender. The strength to persevere through the minefield of the monkey mind. The courage to move into the darkness of the unknown. I’m speaking of silent meditation. It requires the fortitude to endure sowing the seeds of gratitude among weeds and wasps. Once you get in, to the tender comfort of your true heart, you are ready to listen and receive your soul’s power. Anything you ask will be given freely. The irony is, once you have arrived, desire is no longer within you. The suffering has shed away. All you can do is receive your soul’s true purpose. Step two is allowing your true power to manifest in your physical body. Each of our bodies were made to serve the divine purpose of our soul. The shape of your face, the height of your skeleton are all divine creations for your soul to live her true power. Here, I am speaking of a movement practice. I can’t tell you that yoga is better than dance or running or swimming. Ask your soul! But when she speaks, please listen and respond. You probably already know what movement makes you feel alive. The folds and flows that help you feel lighter than air. Your soul responds to it as well. The seemingly random ideas that pop in your head, or the clarity of mind that you receive after a great session. These are the gifts of your soul. Positive reinforcement of beneficial behaviors. Let’s re-cap. Your heart is the seat of your soul’s true power. Step one brings your mind in alignment with your heart. Step two brings your body in alignment with your heart. All that remains to balance is the spark of spirit which flows in all living beings. Step three is to nourish your soul with love. I’d like to believe that fresh cut flowers and chocolate croissants nourish my soul, but that is an illusion. My soul seeks other souls. My soul is an eternally happy, loving soul, and she seeks others to mirror her bliss. Alone I see nothing. With another, I see the infinite within me. I see my soul as a reflection of your beautiful qualities. Nourishing you, nourishes me. Here, I experience the blissful joy of unconditional love. Enjoy the ride Dear Sisters, and have fun making these steps your own.
