Wild Thing became somewhat of a 'rockstar pose' to my yoga teacher training class when I was studying with Leigh Anne at Nirvana. She would have us pop in and out of this deep heart opener in the middle of an epic vinyasa sequence between things like side plank and flying warrior. In her fast paced sweat-dripping flow, this three point balance posture was a welcomed pause to notice how wonderful life really is. For my students in a Sunday morning restorative class, we approach gently and mindfully. I led us through several warm up poses like eagle arms, pone shoulder opener, and lots of hip opening before we slowly entered into a shape of blissful surrender to the sun.
Sunday morning restorative wild thing starts in table top position-knees and hands firmly planted on the ground, heart towards earth. Extend one leg backward and place foot inline with hand and foot on opposite side-three points in a single line. Stretch your arm up for supported side plank-heart is open to horizon. Next, kick out your shin thats resting on ground so it extends perpendicular from your body. (sometimes yogis will call this a kickstand, so you don't fall over in more advanced balance poses). Now, reach your extended leg's foot back so it is inline with your resting foot-this motion will open your torso up towards the sky. You should be firmly grounded here. Release your extended arm down into your shoulder socket. Turn yourself open to the sun and let that free arm just melt down to the earth, palm up towards the sky. Since thats about as clear as oragami instructions, I better make a video!
